A Lawless Nation
A Lawless Nation
March,2002

The UN Charter’s prohibition of aggression or intervention in internal affairs
of other nations has not only continued to be ignored but the current UN
Secretary General has espoused interventions for humanitarian purposes.
There is still considerable international sentiment that all such interventions
should be authorized by the UN Security Council, but the US with
overwhelming power has chosen to act independently with little objections
by the Senate to illegal Presidential assumption of power to make war.

.But with what we suffered on September 11 and the heavy financial costs
and personal inconveniences we will continue to suffer, I will argue that this
shows that America would have benefited from behaving lawfully and
adhering to the non-aggression provisions in the UN Charter. US lawless
international actions such as those listed below have substantially
contributed to support of Muslim terrorist leaders. .

Iran
The CIA’s role in the overthrow of Mossadegh in 1954 with the resulting
repressive rule of the Shah. And we indirectly gave some support to
Hussein in the attacks he launched on Iran.
.
North Korea
The US-led defense of South Korea as sponsored by the UN Security
Council was a shining example of making illegal aggressions unprofitable.
But MacArthur was authorized only to drive the North Koreans back to its
border.  His continued advance through North Korea to the Chinese border
was a major disaster in lives lost and destruction to both the American
forces and to North Korea.  It is impossible to know, but certainly there is
some chance that relations now might now better if we had stopped at the
border
.
Iraq
As in the case of North Korea, whether our role has contributed to Hussein’
s position as a perceived terrorist threat is only a “maybe.”  Our first
dereliction was to fail in our obligation as a member of the UN Security
Council to take any action when Hussein attacked Iran in 1954 with a
resulting long war and millions of lives lost on both sides.
It is certain that our support of Israel’s illegal actions since the 1967 war
has been a major cause of hatred of America and support for terrorist
leaders.

Mideast and terrorism
Carter’s Camp David peace agreement between Israel and Egypt did not
halt the illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied territories; it actually
made Israel feel more secure in continuing to expand them. Subsequent
“peace” negotiations have ignored this settlement problem.
Afghanistan – Soviet intervention in its ill-fated attempt in the 80s to install
its choice of ruler was clearly illegal.  But our covert interference by
supplying weaponry and munitions to the Mujadeen was also clearly illegal.
The result was a victory for the warlords and such disorder that the Taliban
was welcomed as a stabilizing force.
